In the first East London Art Prize Winner’s Solo Exhibition at the Nunnery Gallery, Kat Anderson premieres Mark of Cane.
What is the East London Art Prize?
For those who need a reminder, the East London Art Prize celebrates and promotes the incredible talent and diversity of art made in the cultural hive of east London. It is is an all-media art prize designed to showcase the talent of artists working and living in east London, with an accompanying event programme supporting artists’ careers and opportunities.

What is the Winner’s Exhibition?
The winner of the East London Art Prize puts together a solo exhibition at the Nunnery Gallery the following year, to be developed in conjunction with Bow Arts and run as part of the Gallery programme. They also recieve a £15,000 cash prize.
Who won the East London Art Prize 2023?
Selected by Larry Achiampong, Louisa Buck, Ellie Pennick and Megan Piper in 2022, the Winner of the inaugural East London Art Prize was Kat Anderson.
Kat’s prizewinning work ‘John’ is a two-channel film installation which tells the story of a young male patient of a psychiatric hospital who witnesses the death of another Black male patient at the hands of white staff.
Debuting at the Nunnery Gallery in 2024, Mark of Cane explores the impact of sugar on the African-Caribbean Diaspora, confronting the haunting legacies of the Industrial Revolution and the Transatlantic Slave trade. In line with the larger project ‘Episodes of Horror’, Mark of Cane questions the emancipatory potential of creativity, reclamation and listening to history.
Mark of Cane will be accompanied by a public programme of events inviting participants to sessions run by visual artists and facilitators exploring grief work, indigo dyeing and more, with more information following shortly.
